Deodorants contain toxic aluminium, parabens, triclosan, and propylene glycol that can cause skin irritation, hormonal imbalance and even cancer. DIY deodorant: Mix 6 tbsp coconut oil, 1/4 cup baking soda, 1/4 cup cornstarch, and few drops of your favorite essential oil. Store in a glass container and apply on your sweat-prone areas. This is natural, non-toxic and easy on your pocket.
When I first made the switch over to more natural products, finding a good deodorant was tough. Many of the alternative brands just didn’t cut it for me and going back to conventional brands wasn’t an option either.
You may be asking why I ditched the conventional brands. Well, to keep it short and sweet, they contain harmful ingredients that I didn’t want to put on my skin.
Harmful Ingredients Present In Deodorants
Our bodies are supposed to sweat. And deodorants block your body’s ability to sweat. Sweating is the body’s way of cleansing and detoxifying. When we block our bodies with deodorants, those toxins can’t get out. Many conventional deodorants contain components like aluminum, parabens, triclosan and propylene glycol.
Dangers Of Aluminum
- Aluminum clogs your pores, preventing you from sweating and interferes with your estrogen levels.
- It has been linked to breast cancer in women, prostate cancer in men and increases the risk of Alzheimer’s Disease.
- Parabens can be found in many products as well as deodorants.
- Aluminum is used as a preservative and possesses estrogen-mimicking properties in the body, thereby causing hormonal imbalance.
Dangers Of Triclosan
- Triclosan has been classified by the FDA as a pesticide. If that isn’t bad enough for you, when combined with water, it creates a carcinogenic gas called chloroform.
- Triclosan is also an endocrine disruptor and a skin irritant.
Dangers Of Propylene Glycol
- Propylene Glycol is commonly used as a skin conditioning agent.
- It can also cause damage to your central nervous system, heart and liver and has been shown to irritate skin.
Given all those possible side effects of using conventional deodorants, I took matters into my own hands and decided to make my own deodorant. It saves me money and gives me control over what goes on my skin and in my body. Here’s the recipe:
- 6 Tablespoons Coconut Oil
- 1/4 cup Baking Soda
- 1/4 cup Cornstarch
- A few drops of my favorite essential oil
- Combine everything in a small bowl until mixed well.
- Store in a glass container and use daily.
It’s a super easy recipe and takes me about 5 minutes to make. The beauty of this recipe is that it really works!
